Arkansas baseball: Hogs hammer 4 homers in intrasquad opener | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
FAYETTEVILLE -- Ryder Helfrick and Makia Niu hit towering home runs and big left-hander Hunter Dietz led a group of nine pitchers to put in work in the opening scrimmage of the season for the University of Arkansas baseball team Friday. The scrimmage, a seven-inning affair won 7-3 by the Black squad over the Cardinal, was played with temperatures in the mid-40s at Baum-Walker Stadium in the earliest preseason scrimmage in school history based on the expanded practice time this season. Coach Dave Van Horn, entering his 24th season at the helm, seemed genuinely pleased after watching the Razorbacks hit 4 home runs, swipe 4 bases, commit 3 errors and rap out 17 hits. "Give credit to the hitters," Van Horn said. "They came out firing and getting some good swings off, and our pitchers, the stuff was good. Now maybe the result wasn't great, but the velocity was good, the breaking balls were good. "We did a little bit of everything. We gave up some runs, gave up some home runs, but like I said, the stuff was good. But first day out, temperature you know mid-January, I really liked what I saw."
