Carolinas, Georgia are included in 17 state salmonella outbreak linked to eggs

Salmonella cases across 17 states, including the Carolinas and Georgia, have been linked to millions of recalled eggs, though federal investigators say other sources may be to blame. Nearly 1.6 million cartons of white and cage-free brown eggs produced in Texas were recalled last week over concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The eggs were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana; Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi, and to foodservice and retailer customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have since linked an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of people to the recalled eggs. Cases, however, are appearing in states far from where the eggs were distributed. As of Friday, 98 cases of illness had been linked to the salmonella outbreak, though the true number of people who have fallen ill is likely much higher, according to the CDC.
