BARLING -- Four Arkansas National Guard members were awarded medals Thursday at Fort Chaffee for actions taken during and after an accident that injured several soldiers on Monday. The Department of the Army awarded Staff Sgt. Jorge Ramirez-Martinez, Staff Sgt. Ryan Niblett, Sgt. Eduardo Salazar, and Staff Sgt. James Roach the Meritorious Service Medal for their responses to an accident in which eight guardsmen were taken to a hospital, and one soldier was seriously injured after a military vehicle accident on Monday at Fort Chaffee. "We want to recognize these four soldiers for what they've done, but it's really, I think, illustrative of the reality that we choose to do things that are dangerous," Brig. Gen. Chad Bridges, Arkansas' adjutant general, said during the ceremony on Thursday. National Guard members sign up to protect the state and the nation, Bridges said, but they also serve their teammates.
