In a story that is straight nightmare fuel, an Arkansas high school football player recently spent an hour practicing with a snake slithering around in his helmet.
And it was not just any snake. It was a venomous cottonmouth.
According to reports, the player made it about halfway through practice before he brought his helmet over to be checked out by staff. That weird feeling he had when he put it on, according to Maumelle High School Athletic Director Kirk Horton, turned out to be a two-foot-long cottonmouth that had somehow gotten into his helmet. The snake was hiding underneath the padding inside.
"It really was just shock and disbelief," Horton told KARK.com. I've got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years."
The cottonmouth is a pit viper that earned its name because when approached it often coils and opens its mouth widely to display its white or cotton-like interior. It has a powerful cytotoxic venom that destroys tissue. They have thick, muscular bodies and a pattern around their eyes that has been described as a "Zorro mask." Cottonmouths eat fish, small mammals, birds, amphibians and other reptiles.
