The eighth-ranked Arkansas softball team capped an Opening Day doubleheader sweep with a 9-1 victory over Akron in a six-inning run-rule Friday afternoon at the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, South Carolina. The Razorbacks (2-0) combined to outscore their opponents 26-2 on their first day of the season. They defeated Virginia 17-1 (5 innings) in Game 1, which set a program record for most runs scored in a season opener. "I think there's a lot of things that went right today," Arkansas coach Courtney Deifel said. "I thought our team just set a really good tone in the beginning. ... We just had a really great competitive presence throughout the whole day, so I was really pleased with that." Freshman right-hander Saylor Timmerman pitched the final inning of the victory over the Cavaliers and got the starting nod 30 minutes later against Akron. A leadoff error by Atalyia Rijo at shortstop came back to bite Arkansas when Brooke Sivek scored on a two-out, RBI single from Sophia Wygast to put Akron ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
