With just two days remaining until Monday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline, the Seattle Mariners have added a major wrinkle to the mix.
On Saturday afternoon, ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported on X that the Mariners are engaged with multiple teams on a potential trade involving starter George Kirby.
Seattle has been trying to trade from its surplus of starting pitching at this deadline, with Luis Castillo and Emerson Hancock among the reported names available. Kirby, along with Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller, had previously been viewed as untouchable.
Kirby, 28, is a former All-Star and potential top-of-the-rotation starter who would make a tremendous impact on any team that acquires him. He has underperformed by his standards this season, posting an 8-9 record with a 3.98 ERA over 120 innings. He also has 107 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP.
The right-hander remains under team control through arbitration for two more seasons and is making $6.55 million this year. Any potential trade would require a monster return, likely involving at least one top-100 prospect.
