FORT SMITH -- An Oklahoma man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to Arkansas sex crimes charges involving a person younger than 14 years old. Vincent L. Barnes, 29, of Muldrow, Okla., is charged in Sebastian County Circuit Court with one count of rape of a person younger than 14 and one count of first-degree sexual assault. Court records note he was in a position of authority over the child. The offenses occurred between Sept. 1 and Jan. 16, according to a probable cause affidavit from Jan. 17, the day Barnes was arrested. The heavily redacted affidavit states Barnes approached a detective and subsequently was interviewed by investigators. He then was arrested and later charged. As of Thursday, a jury trial was set for the week of July 13 in the case. Barnes remained in the Detention Center on Friday in lieu of $250,000 bond.
