Road crews prepare for weekend winter weather in the Texarkana region
TEXARKANA, Texas - As Texarkana braces for possibly the first winter weather storm of the year, transportation crews are pre-treating roadways on both sides of the state line. "Our goal is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best," said Heather Deaton, TXDOT public information officer. Deaton says they're working now to pre-treat highways with a salt and water solution to help prevent ice bonding to the roadway. All their maintenance offices are equipped with brine makers. "Even though it is raining, past experience has shown us that brine does typically stick through the rain," said Deaton. Crews are focused on treating interstates 20 and 30, along with U.S. Highway 59. Once winter weather hits, they'll begin monitoring the roads around the clock. "We will be here until the threat has passed. Our goal is to keep our major roadways passable, to keep them as passable as possible," said Deaton. The Arkansas Department of Transportation has 78,000 cubic yards of salt on hand to support statewide storm response.
