Texas migration

Texas leads the nation in supplying new residents to other states

Texas leads the nation in supplying new residents to other states, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. Texas was the top source of new residents for Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma in 2024. With 31 million residents, Texas ranks second in population and gained 2.1 million people between 2020 and 2024. Dudley Poston, professor emeritus at Texas A&M University, attributes this to Texas's large population size. Other large producers of out-migrants include California, Florida, and New York.
