Arkadelphia-based Southern Bancorp, Inc. plans to change its name to Uplift Bank, pending regulatory approval. Southern Bancorp, founded in 1986, is one of the nation's oldest Community Development Financial Institutions. In a news release Thursday, the company said its name change reflects its mission to serve under-resourced communities and ensure access to financial tools. Darrin Williams, chief executive officer of Southern Bancorp, Inc, said in the release that the new name "better reflects our 40-year history of creating economic opportunity and lifting individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and neighborhoods in underserved communities." Southern Bancorp serves customers through 66 banking locations in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Texas and Oklahoma. Southern Bancorp Community Partners, the nonprofit loan fund and financial development partner to Southern Bancorp, will be renamed to Uplift Capital Partners. Customers will continue using their existing checks, debit cards, and services until the name transition, and will be notified of any changes in advance. -- Casey Mann.
